Notes

Once again Italian singer song-writer Ariella Uliano offers us a breathtaking and unique album, perhaps her best to date. Ariella’s A.U. (almost) a Compilation is an unusual and inspired mix of original songs and traditional ballads performed with a pure and unaffected soprano voice in Italian and English and accompanied by the orchestral arrangements of her virtuoso musicians.

There is a sense of spirituality, love and introspection in Ms. Uliano’s work. Many the gems in this collection but two songs from the great English tradition are in my opinion outstandingly performed by Ariella: Walter Scott’s Ellen’s Third Song (from: The Lady Of The Lake – Hymn To The Virgin, for most of us Schubert’s Ave Maria), and Child’s ballad The Three Ravens (new version).

Non Parlar Troppo D’Amore and Canto D’Autunno are two autobiographical ‘canzoni’ sung in Italian and here Ariella’s voice is especially beautiful. They speak of friendship and love. Canto D’Autunno has won a song contest in Italy.

A special mention also goes to the rock ballad Untitled live – recorded in Rome with guitarist Osamu Yano and Ariella’s partner Renzo Frontoni – and Good Morning London, a song complemented by a music video shot on location in London. The single Good Morning London has also won two song contests in the UK and USA.

New arrangements for the ballads So, We’ll Go No More A-Roving and In The Bleak Midwinter, with words by Lord Byron and Christina Rossetti, together with the Celtic classics Skye Boat Song from Scotland and Salley Gardens by W B Yeats complete the album which comes with an accompanying 32 pages A5 size libretto containing lyrics, B/W artwork and colour photographs inspired by the poetry.

Ariella’s A.U. (almost) a Compilation  is a must-have album for folk and world music collectors.

Ariella is regularly invited to speak on Literature, Music and Dance at various educational events both in Italy and in the UK.

Bonus track: the original version of ‘Untitled’ introducing Renzo Frontoni & Osamu Yano

In Leave Only Your Footsteps Behind Ariella Uliano performs original songs and traditional ballads with virtuoso instrumentalists from Italy, Austria, Japan, England and Ireland. Ariella’s CD Leave Only Your Footsteps Behind features enchanting vocals and melodies and rich arrangements  reflecting the diverse backgrounds and styles of the artists involved: from classical to country and jazzy, and even a fine example of slow rock, with the last track of the album sung by Renzo Frontoni and played by renown guitarist Osamu Yano. The title track Leave Only Your Footsteps Behind by Ariella Uliano also features bluesman Will Killeen on guitars and banjo. My favourites: an intense interpretation of Robert Burns’ Red Rose and a version of The Wraggle Taggle Gipsies for voice, guitar and violin.

An eclectic album: Ariella Uliano’s Leave Only Your Footsteps Behind is Collage music at its best, a unique blend of ballads, dance tunes and modern songs from the English, Scottish and Italian traditions but also about life and places in London. Enjoy!

Ariella Uliano – Tanto Gentile E Tanto Onesta Pare

Ariella Uliano’s album Tanto Gentile E Tanto Onesta Pare (also the title of a famous Italian poem by Dante Alighieri, translated in English by Dante G.Rossetti as ‘My Lady Looks So Gentle And So Pure’) embraces and links together the tradition of Celtic and English balladry with the poetry of Medieval and Renaissance Italy. The songs, melodies and words on this album speak of the joys and pleasures of love and the arrival of the warm and sunny season.

Ariella’s Tanto Gentile E Tanto Onesta Pare also features Medieval poetry by Dante Alighieri himself from: The Divine Comedy – about the Poet’s meeting with the two lovers Paolo & Francesca in Canto V (Inferno) and Vita Nova (New Life) with the famous sonnet dedicated to his beloved Beatrice Tanto Gentile E Tanto Onesta Pare. Ariella’s CD also showcases the poem by the Italian Renaissance ‘poetessa’ Gaspara Stampa Arsi, Piansi, Cantai, words by Lorenzo De’ Medici from Canzona Di Bacco and a lyric by Lorenzo’s tutor and humanist Angelo Poliziano entitled I’ Mi Trovai, Fanciulle Un Bel Mattino.

In Tanto Gentile E Tanto Onesta Pare the poems are set to original melodies by Ariella Uliano and to traditional French and Irish tunes.

The songs Tanto Gentile E Tanto Onesta Pare and Sumer (is I-cumen in) from the album Tanto Gentile E Tanto Onesta Pare are also available on DVD.

My favourites: Mary Hamilton, She’s Like The Swallow and The Lover’s Ghost played on the pianoforte by Stefan Oslansky, enjoy. The Publisher
